Gilas Pilipinas won their First Asian Games against India


The Philippine national men’s basketball team got their gold medal bid underway with an 85-76 victory over Group B qualifiers India in its first game in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.

With the win, Gilas Pilipinas formalized its entry into the quarterfinal round but can improve its position in their next preliminary round game against FIBA Asia Champions Iran on Thursday.




Naturalized player Marcus Douthit and sharpshooter Jeff Chan both led a balanced Philippine offensive with 14 points apiece. Douthit also had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Several other Filipinos finished in double figures with Gary David adding 13, June Mar Fajardo 12 and LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar chipping in with 10 apiece.

Gilas Pilipinas, fresh off a positive campaign in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain where it beat Senegal and gave several European and South American teams a run for their money, got off to an auspicious start in this one after blazing their way to a 16-0 run.
