Marcus Douthit,Keifer Ravena and Kobe Paras to Banner Gilas Pilipinas for SEAGAMES

The Philippine national men’s basketball team’s naturalized player Marcus Douthit and 49 of the best amateur standouts were named to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ pool of players for the national team that will compete in the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

Douthit, who has been part of Gilas Pilipinas since 2011, was part of the pool led by collegiate league MVPs Kiefer Ravena of the UAAP’s Ateneo and Scottie Thompson of the NCAA’s University of Perpetual Help. Also on the list is US-based prospect Kobe Paras as well as standouts Ray Parks and Moala Tautuaa.

“The SBP has already selected a pool of 50 players which obviously probably includes everybody that you can think of. Outside of the PBA, these are all either collegiate players or D-League players,” Gilas Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin said.

“We’re gonna have to have a long look at that list and before we go on the court, we’ll probably cut that list down considerably and then we’ll take what’s left on the court and we’ll make our final decisions probably some time in March about what the roster would be.”

Douthit, of course, will be an important piece for that team. The experienced veteran center has bannered the Gilas squad in two FIBA Asia Championships (2011 and 2013) and helped the country qualify for last year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup held in Spain. He also competed in the 2014 Asian Games in Korea.

Currently playing in the PBA as a replacement import for the Blackwater franchise, Douthit could spearhead the national team for a third time in the SEA Games.

The youthful Paras, meanwhile, is currently in the United States playing for the LA Cathedral Phantoms and has committed to play for the UCLA Bruins in the US NCAA. But in a previous interview with InterAksyon.com, the second generation star stated his desire to represent the Philippines as long as there is no conflict with his basketball commitments in the US.
